Bengaluru Airport plans doorstep baggage pickup and chauffeur rides: What travellers should know
Bengaluru Airport (Canva)

Let’s agree, airport journeys can be stressful even before reaching the terminal. Understanding the situation, Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) is planning to come up with a more seamless alternative. In a recent update, the airport is planning to expand its Care by BLR passenger-assistance programme with a proposed home check-in service that could allow passengers to have their baggage collected from their doorstep before they leave for the airport. The proposed service is part of Bengaluru Airport’s broader effort to extend passenger assistance beyond the terminal and create what it describes as a more end-to-end travel experience. More importantly, the home check-in facility is not yet a regular service for passengers. How could Bengaluru airport’s home check-in work?

Under the proposed arrangement, the airport’s passenger-assistance service could begin even before a traveller leaves home. The experience could include a wake-up call, followed by the arrival of personnel to collect the passenger’s baggage. Travellers could then be taken to Kempegowda International Airport in a chauffeur-driven vehicle.Once at the airport, the Care by BLR team would continue assisting the passenger with the remaining airport formalities and the journey towards the boarding gate. The proposal is particularly interesting for passengers with heavy bags, elderly passengers and more.Care By BLR is already operating at Bengaluru Airport

The proposed home check-in service is not a completely new concept for Bengaluru Airport. It is planned as an expansion of Care by BLR, the airport’s existing personalised passenger-service programme.According to George Bennet Kuruvilla, Executive Director and CEO of Bengaluru Airport Services Limited, the programme follows a broader approach to passenger assistance, covering the journey from the kerbside to the gate and from the gate back towards the kerbside. The airport has indicated that Care by BLR is already seeing substantial use, with around 300 to 350 transactions a day across its services, according to Kuruvilla.Chauffeur-Driven airport transfersWhile doorstep baggage collection and home check-in remain in the planning stage, premium airport transfers are already part of the Care by BLR offering. Travellers looking for a more luxurious transfer between Bengaluru and KIA can choose chauffeur-driven premium vehicles. The service includes cars from brands such as BMW, Audi, Mercedes and Rolls-Royce.The limousine service has been reported to start at around ₹4,500, although the actual price depends on factors such as the vehicle selected, distance and duration. For passengers seeking an ultra-luxury option, Rolls-Royce transfers have been reported to start at around ₹50,000. These figures should be treated as indicative rather than a fixed tariff for the proposed home check-in package. However, the airport has not yet announced the precise categories of items that would qualify, the courier process, destinations covered or the cost of the proposed service. Therefore, travellers should not assume that every prohibited or restricted item would automatically qualify for courier delivery. When will the service start?

This is the main point for travellers: there is currently no confirmed launch date for the proposed home check-in and doorstep baggage collection facility.Bengaluru Airport officials have indicated that additional passenger services are being planned, but the final details of the home service, including pricing, geographical coverage, baggage conditions, booking procedure and airline eligibility, have not yet been officially announced. For now, travellers should therefore view doorstep baggage pickup and home check-in as a planned extension of Care by BLR, rather than a service that can already be booked.
