Speaking on the Therapuss podcast, Kidman recalled how strange that night felt. She had the biggest prize in the film industry in her hands, yet she didn’t have a partner to share the moment with.
“I was beyond lonely. I had the pinnacle of my success, and I went home and was so lonely,” she recalled.
At the time, Kidman had already gone through a major change in her personal life. Her marriage to Tom Cruise had ended in 2001, and two years later, she was standing on the biggest stage of her career.
Her parents were there with her, but that wasn’t quite what she was looking for.
“I had my mom with me and my dad, but I was like, ‘Where’s my partner, someone that I can share this with?’” Kidman said.
She described the realization as one of the most profound moments of her life. Even while holding the Oscar – something she had worked so hard to achieve – she felt that something was missing.
“I’ve got to get a life,” she remembered thinking.
Kidman also admitted that she simply wanted someone to wrap her arms around that night. Someone with whom she could look at the moment and feel, ‘This is my life.’
