Motorists will no longer need to remove and replace the FASTag affixed to their vehicle when they want to change the bank that issued it. Union minister Nitin Gadkari recently launched ‘OneTag’, a portability facility that allows users to switch to a different issuer bank while continuing to use the same physical FASTag.Gadkari launched the facility at the Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai. The initiative is intended to give FASTag users more flexibility in choosing their issuer bank and make the process of switching banks simpler.

What is OneTag?

OneTag has been introduced to simplify the process for NETC FASTag users who want to change their issuer bank. The facility allows customers to move from one issuer bank to another according to their requirements without having to replace the NETC FASTag already installed on their vehicle.‘OneTag’ is also intended to make the issuer-switching process smoother, give customers greater choice and support a more interoperable and efficient NETC FASTag ecosystem.Under the existing system, motorists who want to change their FASTag issuer have to close their current tag and complete the onboarding process again, which includes getting a new physical tag.OneTag removes the need for this replacement, allowing users to retain the FASTag already installed on their vehicle while changing the issuer bank. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said that once portability is successfully completed, the existing Tag ID and the vehicle registration number will remain unchanged. The new portability facility will be accessible through the National Highways Authority of India’s Rajmargyatra mobile application. However, switching the issuer does not mean that the wallet linked to the old FASTag will automatically move to the new bank. The existing issuer will continue to be responsible for the previous wallet and matters associated with it, including refunds, pending transactions and other obligations. After portability is completed successfully, the new issuer bank will handle the onboarding and provide its services. The facility could make it more convenient for motorists to change banks if they are unhappy with the services provided by their existing issuer or want to opt for another bank’s FASTag-related services. They can do so without having to remove a working FASTag and replace it with another one.

How a user can access OneTag

Users can access the OneTag facility through NHAI’s Rajmargyatra mobile app.The existing issuer bank will continue to be responsible for customer verification and the previous wallet. It will also handle refunds, pending transactions and other related matters. Once the user chooses another issuer, the new bank will carry out the onboarding process and provide its services after portability is successfully completed. The Rajmargyatra app will take users through the various stages of the transfer. This includes checking whether the FASTag is eligible for portability, completing secure verification, providing customer consent, choosing the preferred issuer bank and then completing the onboarding process with the new issuer.

Is fresh KYC required for OneTag?

Yes. Users switching their FASTag issuer bank through OneTag will have to complete a fresh KYC process. The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways said the Rajmargyatra app will guide users through the FASTag portability procedure. To begin, users can log in to the app and enter their vehicle registration number to determine whether their FASTag is eligible for the facility. The current issuer bank will then send a six-digit Mobile Verification Code (MVC) to the user for verification.Once the authorisation is completed, the user will have to choose the new issuer bank and undergo customer verification, including KYC, as well as wallet onboarding with the new issuer. These steps are required to complete the portability process. After the transfer is successfully completed, the FASTag ID already linked to the vehicle registration number will remain the same. This means the user can continue using the physical FASTag already attached to the vehicle, even after switching to a different issuer bank.

What will happen to your existing FASTag wallet?

Once the portability process is successfully completed, the previous issuer bank will close the existing FASTag wallet. The balance remaining in the wallet will then be refunded after making any applicable adjustments, according to an ET report.Users should also note that an interoperable FASTag comes with a six-month cooling-off period. This means the FASTag cannot be ported again until six months have passed. The applicable security deposit and minimum balance requirements are as follows:
