The impacts of a temporary breach of the 1.5-degree celsius global warming threshold on the Earth’s ice sheets and glaciers will not remain limited to remote regions but could affect communities much closer to home, a lead author of a new report said on Monday.James Kirkham, chief scientist at the International cryosphere climate initiative (ICCI) and coordinating lead author of the report, told PTI Videos that further temperature rises would substantially worsen several climate-related impacts and could make some of the most severe consequences irreversible.Titled overshoot and the cryosphere, the report examines the potential effects of temporarily exceeding the 1.5-degree celsius warming limit on glaciers and ice sheets. The report has been prepared by the ICCI in coordination with the united nations environment programme (UNEP). It serves as a thematic companion to UNEP’s recently released report, limiting overshoot.
