The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) has proposed postponing the Madhyamik (Class 10) board examinations 2027 from February to March, citing the deployment of teachers for the forthcoming Census exercise. The board has forwarded a revised examination schedule to the state education department, seeking approval to shift the examinations by around two weeks.According to a report by PTI, the board has proposed conducting the annual examinations from March 2 to March 16, 2027, instead of the earlier scheduled dates of February 15 to February 25.However, the revised schedule has not received approval from the state education department. The existing examination timetable will remain unchanged until the department takes a decision on the proposal.
Census duty prompts WBBSE to seek change in examination dates
The proposed postponement comes against the backdrop of the Census exercise, which is scheduled to begin on January 25, 2027, and continue until February 28. Teachers involved in conducting the Madhyamik examinations are also expected to be deployed for the enumeration exercise during February.Explaining the board’s position, WBBSE president Laltu Das told PTI that the revised dates were only a proposal and that no final decision had been taken.“This is a proposal. Nothing has been finalised yet. As teachers who will conduct exams will have to be deployed for the enumeration exercise in February,” Das said.He further confirmed that the board had submitted its recommendation to the state education department and was awaiting a decision.

Students will receive 15 minutes to read the question paper before beginning to write their answers at 11 AM.The board is yet to announce any changes to the examination timings in connection with its proposed revised schedule.
Fresh timetable likely after government approval
If the state education department clears the proposal, WBBSE will issue a revised subject-wise examination calendar reflecting the new dates. Until then, students should refer to the existing timetable and follow announcements published through the board’s official channels. The proposed change is likely to be an important development for students, schools and teachers preparing for the 2027 Madhyamik examinations, particularly as the Census exercise is expected to overlap with the originally scheduled examination period.(With inputs from PTI)
