From London to Moscow: 10 places around the world where you’ll find Mahatma Gandhi

Table of Content

Mahatma Gandhi spent his early legal career in South Africa. He fought against racial discrimination and developed his philosophy of Satyagraha and community-based ethical living during his years there. Gandhi travelled extensively across South Africa, which has several sites associated with his early activism and legacy.

Tolstoy Farm, near Johannesburg, was established in 1910 with the support of Gandhi’s close friend Hermann Kallenbach. Gandhi and his followers lived there as a community, practising simple and cooperative living while preparing for Satyagraha. Another important site is Pietermaritzburg Railway Station, where Gandhi was removed from a first-class railway compartment in 1893 for being Indian. The incident became an important turning point in his fight against racial discrimination.
