How some Indian handloom traditions are slowly disappearing

Table of Content

Traditionally associated with West Bengal, the Garad-Korial silk saree is known for its natural white or off-white base and deep red borders and motifs. The red-and-white palette has strong associations with Bengali rituals and ceremonies, including Durga Puja, and the saree is also traditionally worn at weddings.
While festive Indian fashion often gravitates towards heavier embellishment, Garad silk does not rely on excessive ornamentation. The red-and-white combination carries its own visual language, one that has become closely tied to Bengali identity, ritual and celebration.
What risks disappearing with such traditions is therefore not merely a particular colour combination or weaving style. It is the familiarity of seeing a particular saree at a particular moment in life: during a puja, a festival, a ceremony, or in the wardrobe of someone who wore it before you. The value of Garad silk lies partly in these associations, accumulated over generations until a saree becomes almost inseparable from the memory of the occasion.(Image credit: Wikipedia)
