How to wear coloured gemstones with confidence

Table of Content

When a friend is asked to consult on an outfit, the question is: ‘What is the occasion?’ When it comes to carrying coloured gemstones with confidence, flip that narrative on its head and ask, instead: ‘What colour should I wear?’

Deep red and forest greens carry a sense of formality but only after dark. Pale violet, aqua and rose are softer hues for daylight hours. Yellow and orange stones warm a neutral outfit and work particularly well with ivory, chocolate, navy and black. Multicolour jewellery asks for a little more discipline: choose one shade from the outfit, or keep the clothing muted for a safe, easy bet. Always choose coherent composition over visual noise.

Playing match-match is not always the gold standard. Matching a gemstone to an outfit may feel too deliberate. A neighbouring shade, whether deeper or pastel, makes the pairing interesting. Lilac beside burgundy, turquoise with rust, or amber with olive: all create depth without conflict. Use skin tone to guide your metal choice, but never impose a rule; break every rule in the book as long as you can pull it off with nonchalance. Yellow and gold amplify warm skin tones; white metal gives pastels and cool blues a crisp edge. Whatever you choose, do your final fit check in natural light; colour moves with shadow play and time of day.

Remember this: Less is always more in the universe of coloured gems.
