Mageean dies surrounded by her loved ones

Mageean died at 6.30am on Sunday, November 1, surrounded by her family and loved ones, according to a statement published on her social media accounts. The Irish athlete had announced last year that she had been diagnosed with bowel cancer, with the illness later identified as stage four. The statement read: “At 6:30am this morning, Ciara lost her battle with cancer surrounded by her loved ones. A beloved daughter, sister, wife, friend and inspiration to so many, she will be deeply missed.”It concluded with the Irish-language tribute: “Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam”, meaning “may her soul rest in peace”.Mageean, who was from Portaferry in County Down, Northern Ireland, had married last month. Her death prompted tributes from Athletics Ireland, which described her as a much-loved and inspirational figure whose courage, warmth and spirit would leave a lasting legacy. An initial statement from the governing body said: “Athletics Ireland is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Ciara Mageean.“Ciara was a much-loved and inspirational figure who touched the lives of so many. Her courage, warmth and spirit will leave a lasting legacy.“The thoughts and heartfelt condolences of everyone at Athletics Ireland are with Ciara’s family, friends and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time.“May she rest in peace.”

From European bronze to the 1500m title in Rome

Mageean’s greatest achievement came at the 2024 European Athletics Championships in Rome, where she won the women’s 1500 metres gold medal to become European champion. It was the first major title of her career, following years of competing at the highest level of international middle-distance running. Her European success had been built over several championships. She won bronze in the 1500m at the 2016 European Championships, then improved to silver at the 2022 edition before finally claiming gold two years later. The three medals marked a progression across eight years, with the Rome victory completing a long pursuit of a major senior championship title.Mageean also reached the final of the 1500m at the 2023 World Athletics Championships, finishing fourth. She had come close to a global podium but ended the competition just outside the medal positions. At the Commonwealth Games, she represented Northern Ireland and won silver in the 1500m at Birmingham 2022. The result added another major championship medal to a career that had brought success across European and Commonwealth competition.

Two Olympic appearances and the Paris disappointment

Mageean represented Ireland at the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, becoming a two-time Olympian during a career that took her to the sport’s biggest international competitions. She had been expected to compete at a third consecutive Olympics in Paris in 2024, but an Achilles injury forced her to withdraw from the Games. The setback came in the same year as her European Championship triumph in Rome, leaving her with the distinction of becoming a continental champion but unable to compete at the Olympics that summer. Her career had included both the demands of repeated championship campaigns and the injuries that disrupted her preparations. Despite missing Paris, her European gold, two further European podium finishes, Commonwealth silver and two Olympic appearances established her as one of Ireland’s leading middle-distance athletes.Mageean’s death at 34 brings to an end a career in which she represented Ireland and Northern Ireland at major international championships, culminating in the European title she won in Rome in 2024.
