Kavita Kumari, 27-year-old from Jharkhand has become a national inspiration. Before the sun is fully up, when most homes in Soso village in Jharkhand’s Ramgarh district are still quiet, Kavita starts her day with a run. Without any professional track or training or expensive running shoes, she ran 1,600 metres for a job and to secure her kids future.Who is Kavita Kumari?Kavita is a widow and mother of two who is chasing a place in the Jharkhand Home Guard recruitment. After losing her husband, she has been searching for a steady source of income and, more importantly, a secure future for her children. Her story came into the spotlight after she ran 1,600 metres barefoot during a trial at Sidhu-Kanhu Stadium in Ramgarh, dressed not in sportswear, but in a saree. The run was part of preparations for the upcoming recruitment physical test and was not the final selection itself. Yet, the video touched people across the internet. They did not simply see a woman running for a government job; they saw a mother running with the hopes of her children on her shoulders and refusing to let her struggle define her story. But her story of struggle began much earlier
साड़ी में नंगे पैर होमगार्ड भर्ती के लिए दौड़ लगाने वाली कविता की कहानी संघर्ष से भरी है।
Kavita lost her husband, Deepak Kumar Mahato, in 2023 after a prolonged illness. His death left her responsible for their children, the household and her in-laws. The family was already dealing with financial issues. As per reports, her husband’s medical treatment had left the family with a debt of around INR 6 lakh. She took up work wherever she could, including labour at a brick kiln, to support the family and repay the debt. She had also worked as a private security guard in Ramgarh, but eventually left because late shifts made returning to her village difficult. There was no time for her to stop and grieve for her loss because her children were completely dependent on her.Home Guard recruitmentSo when the opportunity for Home Guard recruitment came, Kavita decided to run for it. Ramgarh’s 2026 Home Guard recruitment has 284 vacancies, with more than 16,000 applications reported. The first stage includes physical tests such as the 1,600-metre run, long jump, high jump and shot put, followed by a written examination. The recruitment process is scheduled to continue with physical tests between October 24 and November 5.For someone with a financial crisis and responsibilities at home, even preparing for such a test can itself become a test.Internet to the rescueKavita did not have money to find herself a coach or sports equipment. So she trained herself with the help of the internet. She watched YouTube videos to understand the whole process. She saw and understood the running and physical training process, sometimes asking her children to operate the phone because she is not comfortable using it herself. She would wake early and practise running near her village. Her situation changed slightly when she found Ajay Karmali, a Home Guard posted in Ramgarh who runs the HMT Physical Academy in Dulmi. The academy provides free physical training to villagers. Kavita came across his social media posts and got in touch with him for the training. Then came the run everyone saw

On October 4, Kavita travelled to Sidhu-Kanhu Stadium for a free trial organised to familiarise candidates with the actual ground before the recruitment test. She arrived in a saree and slippers while many other candidates had tracksuits, sports shoes and training gear. Then she took off her slippers. And ran.The 1,600-metre distance is a physical test for every candidate, but Kavita’s run became something much bigger for the people watching. She crossed the distance comfortably within the 10-minute requirement for women and earned full marks.Kavita was clearly running to pay her bills, to raise her children and to look after a family depending on her.The Home Guard recruitment has reportedly reserved 50 per cent of the posts for women, with a separate 5 per cent provision for widows. For Kavita, that opportunity carries an intensely personal meaning. After her run went viral, support began arriving from outside her village. Dumri MLA Jairam Kumar Mahato sent her a tracksuit and running shoes. When she returned for practice, she could finally run in proper sportswear and footwear.Kavita’s story is inspiring because it is about a woman who had all the reasons to give up, yet continued to run.
