Lalremsiami Hmarzote, hailing from a small hill town in Mizoram, changed the history of Indian hockey by scoring the only goal in the entire match and clinching gold for the Indian team in the Asian Games women’s final in Japan.Playing her 200th international match, she hit a reverse shot into the roof of the net in the tenth minute against China. It was the only goal of the match, and India won 1-0 for their first Asian Games title since 1982, which also earned them a place at the LA 2028 Olympics. But her inspiring story did not start in a big stadium, but on a dusty ground, with bare feet and borrowed sticks.Let’s read futher to know how hardships paved her way into leading India to win Gold at Asian Games 2026.
Meet Lalremsiami Hmarzote: The girl who played barefoot and led India to winning Gold
When Lalremsiami Hmarzote was 11, she told her parents she wanted to leave home and join one of India’s top hockey academies. But there was one small problem that she first had to explain to them what hockey actually was.She grew up in Kolasib, a Himalayan town in Mizoram, where she fell in love with the game, playing barefoot on dirt pitches, according to a Reuters report.Hockey is still a fringe sport in this small hill state, which is located between Bangladesh and Myanmar, and her parents resisted her joining the Sports Authority of India academy in Thenzawl, about 170 km from home, but the 26-year-old says they eventually agreed. She remembers how firm she was, “I told them I have to play it, I can only play hockey.”
How the hilly terrain helped her train better for hockey
She explained that in Mizoram you are always walking up or down a hill, “If you’re walking somewhere, you’re either going up or down the hill”, so your body gets used to tiredness and heavy breathing. She said this helps later when you train as an athlete. According to Reuters, her fitness stood out when she first played for India’s under-18 team, and within a year she was called to the senior camp.In 2018, she won a Youth Olympics silver medal and scored four goals as the senior team reached its first Asian Games final in 20 years. She went on to become the first female Olympian and the first Asian Games medallist from Mizoram. Before this year’s Asian Games she had played 193 times for India. She also became the first Indian woman to score in three World Cups in a row, as India finished fifth at this year’s World Cup in the Netherlands and Belgium, their best result since 1974.Just weeks after she shared these experiences, she scored the only goal against China in her 200th international match, and India took gold in Asian Games 2026, held in Japan.
Yet her biggest dream lies off the field
She had no equipment when she started practicing, and a former player taught them after school using a few sticks she had. She also explained that Mizoram has only three hockey grounds, and that football teams sometimes object to their fields being used for hockey. That left her asking where the kids would play.Lalremsiami explained,“during the World Cup, my mother told me an unknown person came up to her and said their daughter loved hockey, but they did not know how and where to get into it”.She further explained, feeling disheartened, “I felt very bad that I could not help. How am I supposed to guide somebody? I can’t even say, go play in the academy, because it’s so far away. She dreams of building hockey grounds for kids who dream of playing the sport as she did, “It is my dream to build more hockey grounds in Mizoram … they will produce much better players than me; I can guarantee that.”
