‘Hanuman Ansh’ producer reveals why the film won’t be India’s official Oscar entry this year: ‘We are a really small team’

‘Hanuman Ansh’ continues its strong box office run, and the makers are now working to expand the film’s reach across languages and territories. Producer Namrata Singh of SacredIP Trans Media Tech has confirmed that the film is being dubbed in Telugu, with acclaimed filmmaker Trivikram Srinivas associated with the project. The announcement was made on September 11, coinciding with the Mahasamadhi Day of Neem Karoli Baba. The Telugu version is scheduled to release in cinemas on September 18.

‘Hanuman Ansh’ will be dubbed only in Telugu for now

In a conversation with Bollywood Hungama, Namrata Singh was asked whether ‘Hanuman Ansh’ would also be dubbed in Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada. The producer clarified that the team currently has plans only for a Telugu version. She said, “No. We have only dubbed it in Telugu. I am just not getting the time (laughs)! We missed the Oscar submission deadline [for consideration as India’s official entry for Best International Feature Film] yesterday (September 7), as it was the last day. We got calls from a thousand people ki aap ne film submit nahin ki. But we didn’t know about it. We are busy with too many things. Also, we are a really small team.”Explaining the team’s current priorities, Singh said that the makers were focusing on completing one task at a time. She added, “First, we have done dubbing for Telugu and then work on the rest of the languages. We are also working on accessibility so that people of different abilities can see the film. The artists and director are on tour. There’s hardly anyone in the office.”

Why ‘Hanuman Ansh’ missed the Oscar submission deadline

Singh’s comments indicate that the film was not submitted for consideration as India’s official entry for the Best International Feature Film category because the team was occupied with the film’s theatrical expansion, overseas release and accessibility initiatives. She attributed the missed deadline to a lack of awareness about the submission process, the team’s limited size and the number of responsibilities involved in taking the film to a wider audience.

‘Hanuman Ansh’ overseas release was a race against time

Speaking about the challenges of releasing ‘Hanuman Ansh’ internationally, Singh explained that the process involved several logistical and regulatory requirements. She said, “When you release overseas, there are multiple things to take care of. Moreover, I am a first-time producer while Vishal Chaturvedi is a first-time writer-director. Hence, we are all learning on the go how to release the film internationally. She further revealed that the censor processes and preparation of international release assets proved overwhelming. The team was also determined to release the film overseas on September 11, which marked the Mahasamadhi Day of Neem Karoli Baba.Explaining the significance of the date, Singh said, “We are also devotees, and it’s very important for us to release overseas on September 11 because it is Mahasamadhi day for Maharaj ji. That’s the day Maharaj ji left his body in 1973. Hence, the race against time to release on September 11 ne poori jaan le li! Thankfully, we managed, and the release is happening this Friday.”

‘Hanuman Ansh’ team developing a game and comic book

The makers are also planning to expand the ‘Hanuman Ansh’ universe beyond the film. Singh revealed that the team is developing a video game with the company behind ‘FAU-G’. She also confirmed that a comic book is in the works and that discussions are underway with one of the country’s leading comic-book publishers.Singh said, “We are also developing a game. It’s made by the company which has developed FAU-G. We are also working on a comic book, for which we are talking to one of the biggest comic book publishers in the country.”
