For millions of people, Shah Rukh Khan is the man who can make them laugh, charm an audience with his words and turn even an ordinary moment into something memorable. His humour, confidence and larger-than-life personality have become an inseparable part of his public image. But behind that familiar smile is a story of grief, loss and a childhood wound that he says never truly healed. In an unusually emotional conversation at Airtel THiNK 2012, the actor opened up about the death of his father, the devastating impact it had on his sister and the different ways the two siblings dealt with losing their parents.Recalling a moment that stayed with him for years, Shah Rukh spoke about watching his sister struggle after their father’s death. He also made a deeply personal admission: much of the humour, flamboyance and constant activity that people associate with him may actually be his way of keeping sadness at a distance.
The day his father’s death changed his sister’s world
Remembering the immediate aftermath of his father’s death, Shah Rukh described how his sister reacted to the sudden loss. “I remember my sister standing in front of my father’s dead body, and she just looked. She didn’t cry, she didn’t say anything. She just fell. And she hit her head on the ground,” he recalled. What followed was even more difficult for the family. According to the actor, his sister did not cry or speak for nearly two years. He remembered her sitting and looking into space, unable to express what she was going through. The experience changed the family, but it affected his sister in a way that continued long after their father’s death. Shah Rukh revealed that she had been highly educated and intelligent, having completed her MALLB, as he described it. She was everything their parents had hoped she would become. However, the sudden loss of their father made it extremely difficult for her to face reality. “She was highly qualified. She has done MALLB, very intelligent. Like my parents wanted her to be, but she could not face the reality of losing her parents,” he said.
When his sister was hospitalised during the making of DDLJ
The actor also recalled how his sister’s health deteriorated during the period when he was making one of the most memorable films of his career, ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’. He revealed that she was hospitalised again during the film’s making, and doctors told him that she might not survive. Faced with the possibility of losing his sister, Shah Rukh decided to take her to Switzerland for treatment. He arranged for her medical care there while he continued shooting the film’s iconic song, *Tujhe Dekha To Yeh Jaana Sanam*.“I took her to Switzerland and got her treated there while I was shooting Tujhe Dekha To Yeh Jaana Sanam,” he recalled. Although her condition improved, the actor said she never completely recovered from the emotional impact of losing their father. The loss was further compounded when their mother passed away around 10 years later.Reflecting on their circumstances, he described himself and his sister using the words “Yatim and Yasim”, explaining that they had become fatherless and motherless. For him, the loss was not simply about losing two parents. It was also about watching someone he loved struggle with grief in a way that changed the course of her life.
Shah Rukh Khan admits his humour is a way of hiding sadness

Perhaps the most revealing part of the conversation came when Shah Rukh spoke about how he personally dealt with the same losses. While his sister became withdrawn and struggled to process the grief, he developed a different way of coping. He described it as a sense of detachment and false bravado. He suggested that the humour, confidence and flamboyance people often associate with his personality were not always expressions of happiness. In many ways, they were ways of keeping his own sadness from taking over.“I somehow developed the sense of detachment, the sense of false bravado, which I show in public, a sense of humour, and a lot of things that I do, which people think is flamboyant and very Bollywood-like, to cover up the sadness affecting my life,” he said. He explained that he constantly kept himself occupied, working around the clock, finding reasons to laugh and making jokes about situations in his life. For him, staying busy was more than a professional ambition. It was a way of protecting himself from falling into the same emotional state that he had witnessed in his sister. “So to avoid depression, I act,” he admitted. He also made it clear that his constant drive was not simply about earning more money, becoming a bigger star or securing endorsements. There was something much more personal behind his need to keep going.
A sister he loves and a pain he has never fully expressed
Despite describing the difficult years his sister went through, Shah Rukh spoke about her with immense affection. He said that he loved her exactly as she was and considered her a much better person than he could ever be. He described her as a child of God, innocent and uncomplicated. He also shared that his children loved their aunt immensely, even more than they loved him and his wife. He was grateful that she remained such an important part of their family. However, he admitted that he did not have the courage to be as emotionally vulnerable as his sister. “I don’t have the guts to be so simple, so hurt, so disturbed,” he said. His words offered a different understanding of a personality that is often associated with confidence, wit and extraordinary energy. What audiences see as flamboyance, he suggested, can sometimes be a shield against feelings that are much harder to confront. Towards the end of the conversation, Shah Rukh acknowledged that it was perhaps the most honest he had ever been with anyone. The interview, originally from Airtel THiNK 2012, is a reminder that grief does not look the same for everyone. Some people withdraw into silence, while others keep themselves constantly occupied. Behind a public smile, there can be memories and emotions that remain difficult to put into words. And perhaps that is what makes this confession so moving. Shah Rukh Khan, a man who has spent much of his life making others smile, admitted that sometimes, his own smile was a way of keeping himself from breaking.
