Ganesh Chaturthi is falling on Monday, September 14 and investors are wondering whether the festival will affect trading in the stock and commodity markets.NSE and BSE follow their own trading holiday calendars, which are separate from holidays observed by banks and government offices. According to the 2026 exchange calendar, both NSE and BSE will remain closed for trading on September 14 on account of Ganesh Chaturthi. Investors will therefore not be able to buy or sell shares on either exchange during the regular trading session on Monday. Equity derivatives trading will also remain closed.The commodity market, however, follows a different schedule. The Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will remain closed for its morning session from 9 am to 5 pm, but will reopen for trading in the evening session from 5 pm.

What happens to trading and settlement?

A trading holiday means the stock exchanges remain shut and regular trading does not take place. A settlement holiday is different: trading can continue, but the clearing and settlement of eligible trades is paused.Ganesh Chaturthi is listed as a full trading holiday in the 2026 market calendar. The exchange calendar also includes other festivals and national holidays on which trading will remain closed.

What about commodity markets?

The commodity market will follow a different schedule on Ganesh Chaturthi. The Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will remain closed for its morning session from 9 am to 5 pm on Monday, September 14, before reopening for trading in the evening session from 5 pm.The evening session will continue until 11:30 pm, extending to 11:55 pm when the applicable US Daylight Saving Time period is in effect.MCX normally starts its regular trading session at 9 am, while NCDEX begins trading at 10 am.
